Kwanzaa is a wonderful celebration that brings families and communities together to honor African heritage and culture. Explaining Kwanzaa to children can be both educational and fun!
Kwanzaa is a seven-day festival that begins on December 26th and ends on January 1st. It celebrates seven core principles known as the "Nguzo Saba" (the Seven Principles), which include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
During Kwanzaa, families light the "mishumaa saba" (the seven candles) – three red, three green, and one black. Each candle represents one of the principles.
Gifts given during Kwanzaa are often thoughtful and emphasize values such as creativity, learning, and cultural heritage. Children might receive educational books, traditional African crafts, or items that promote unity and responsibility.

It shows how a Black family's cultural awareness and commitment to learning creates Black children and adults we can be proud of. The STEM n’ Nem™ Series also links the Nguzo Saba with other Black occasions to help promote the Seven Principles as a daily vocation and code of conduct in the Black community
